Our CEO, Nils Razmilovic and CTO, Dr Jonathan Middis were privileged to be invited to the 5th Ecosperity Conference held in Singapore on June 5, 2018 by Temasek in conjunction with the United Nations World Environment Day.
The keynote speech and panel discussions focused on education, food and healthcare; in particular, addressing the problems of scale and reach into global populations in an increasingly urban and technology-driven future.
Of particular note is the ‘Food To Nutrition’ discussion with Dr Koh Poh Koon, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, Dr Juergen Viegele, Senior Director of the World Bank (Agriculture Global Practice), Mr Ehab Abu-Oaf, VP Mars-Wrigley Confectionery and Mr Patrick Yu, President of COFCO Corporation.
The broader ecosphere conversations centred on food security, food safety, innovation in Big Ag and FoodTech. Special mentions were made by the panellists on genome sequencing and agriculture yield research, and a call to bring about ‘uncommon collaborations’ with platforms to develop for solutions together. Strong calls were made for the need for ideas that would address the sustainability of the global food ecosystem – one that will feed a growing world population (which today, faces significant undernourishment and hunger, according to statistics from the World Bank).
The panel acknowledged that this is a complex problem, and solving it will require aggressive cooperation and effective frameworks to be set up between governments, scientists, businesses and investors.
Big game-changing, disrupting ideas are already underway in the food world as it learns at an accelerated pace to rely less on animal farming (think plant-based protein like the Impossible Burgers which taste and look like beef burgers), address the issues of ultra-processing of food production and high wastage; and in so doing, to also start reframing consumers’ ideas about nutrition and how it’s perhaps can be delivered better!
